What We Do
|
Our History In 2010, a group of local women joined together to pool their philanthropic resources to benefit the community. The Catonsville Women's Giving Circle awarded its first grants to several local nonprofits in October 2011. Initially, the CWGC found a "home" under the umbrella of the Catonsville Community Foundation (then called the Catonsville Heritage Foundation). This allowed us to operate with tax-exempt status.
A lot has changed since those beginning days. Our membership has greatly expanded. At the same time, the focus of the Catonsville Community Foundation has shifted since it became responsible for the building that once belonged to the Women's Club of Catonsville. While our Circle has grown, we have been developing our own grant-making protocols and forms while networking with other Women's Giving Circles. Eventually it became clear to our Leadership Team that it was time for us to become our own independent 501c3 corporation. With friendly support from the Community Foundation, we began the process during 2018, and now we are independent and separate from the Foundation. There are several significant advantages to this new status. We will have more timely access to and direct control of our financial resources. In addition, we'll be able to raise funds independently to cover our business administrative expenses. As we continue to develop long-range plans for sustaining the Circle's work, we will generally operate as we have in the past. Our core values and our commitment to our community are as strong as ever. |
